Are you a feminist? =o Why or why not?

Why has feminism become a dirty word in these days?

Why aren't more men feminists?

In short, feminism: What does it mean today, and how does it intersect with your concerns and lives?

Feminism seems to have become something of a buzzword in contemporary times. It's often used today as a derisive term which ends up belittling actions of people working for social equality, especially in historical contexts (note that I'm talking about United States here). I think that it is definitely seen as a negative word to a significant amount of people. It is a shame because the feminist movement has been responsible for many women's rights today that many of us take for granted since we were born into an era where they existed. The fact that women today don't have to suffer unfair marriage and divorce practices, suffrage, contraception, etc in the severe way of the past doesn't seem to be thought of when people discuss the feminist movement.

The term "feminism" is often played off as a bunch of angry militant women who attack men and only bitch about insignificant problems instead of really doing something about them, which is not the case. Characterizing a person or group of persons negatively in such a manner is really ignorant and completely discounts the successes of the past.

That said, I hate the word "feminist," but I do support gender equality issues.

I'm curious, why do you hate the word "feminist"? =o Is it because of dealing with the aforesaid negative implications or for some other reason?
